Archives
The Archives organizes and preserves the
history of Bethlehem University. Photographs, documents, brochures, newsletters,
newspaper articles, course catalogues, and other memorabilia are collected. In
1999 the Archives was relocated to the third floor of the library and is
included in the structure and organization of the library. It is open from 8:00
A.M. to noon and 2:00 to 4:00 P.M.
On March 24-30, 2007 two French Archivists
came to visit and assess the B.U. Archives holdings and recommended that the
Archives must be divided into two parts: the Ancient Archives
consist the records from 1973, the beginning of the university to 1989 the third
year of the closure of the university; and the Intermediate
Archives which consist the records from 1990 up to the present. As of September
2009 both Archives (Ancient & Intermediate) are completely
catalogued.

BU ARCHIVES GOES ON DIGITAL
Planning for the digitization project started as early as the start of Fall semester 2009.
Early in August materials to be digitized were already prepared. The actual work started on Oct. 27, 2009 when the (Radio Cassette Tape Recordings) sector was transferred into digital formats. This was done by recording the tapes into a computer server as back up copies of the original tapes. These tapes are interviews, faculty meetings, graduation ceremonies and other activities of the University during the early eighties (80’s). By December 03, 2009, all 22 tapes were digitized.
The next sector is Video-Cassette Recordings (VCR). These are VHS/Beta tapes of graduation ceremonies, dedication of new buildings, and other important activities of the University. There are 59 VHS/Beta tapes of these activities which are now converted to DVDs and already put in the Library System (Libsys) and are available to those who are interested to borrow. When the new server is available all these DVDs will be copied there to serve as back up of the original copies.
As of this Fall 2011 Semester, the Radio Cassette Tape Recordings (RCR)
Sector and Video Cassette Tape Recordings (VCR) Sector and some of the
Photographs (Ph) Sector are already digitized. They can now be accessed through
the OPAC.
Reference Services
Ms. Valerie Rock, Reference Librarian, is available to assist
students in finding books, using the on-line catalog, searching
the card catalog, selecting resources, and answering general
informational questions. The Reference section in this area
includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and other general
and subject reference books. Never hesitate to ask help from the
Reference Librarian.
Photocopying
Card operated photocopiers are
available in the Reference section and on the second
floor. Cards may be purchased from the telephone
operator on the ground floor of the Main Building.
Individual payment is made for photocopying in the
Palestiniana Division.
Library Instruction
Library Skills (LIBR 101) is a
university requirement for all first year students.
This course introduces the student to the three
major media of information: print, audiovisual and
electronic. It also aims at familiarizing the
student with the research strategy approach
including selection of a topic, using information
sources and preparing a bibliography. Evaluation is
based on the completion of the project, a seven-item
bibliography, and a final exam. All first year
students register for the seven-week course
according to their faculty. Mr. Anan Hamad is the
instructor.
Library staff members are
available to give instructional sessions in addition
to LIBR 101. A specialized training session in a
particular subject will be offered upon request.
Planning should be arranged by the teacher and the
library staff member.
