Merlin Plus from Enhanced
Vision is a video magnifier system which enables
individuals with low vision to read small print. A page
is opened on a tray and with easy-to-use buttons that
are also distinguishable by touch, one can enlarge and
enhance the image displayed on a monitor. The system
enables the individual to select the image in color,
black and white, or enhanced high-contrast positive or
negative viewing modes. This electronic magnification
system is set up in the Periodicals Room and is
available for use by all.
Another recent addition is the
Mountbatten Brailler. This device is an electronic
Braille writer with various applications. Our version
is connected to a dot matrix printer EPSON LX-300+. Its
primary use enables the student to type in Braille and
print in English text.
The JAWS software is now
available in Arabic. It contains the features that we
have used in the English version for several years. A
complete description is available in the News Bulletin
Archive found under Students with Special Needs on the
library website. Now students are able to perform the
same tasks using the Arabic language.
These three additions provided for
the students with visual impairments are available in
the library. Arab Student Aid International provided
the funds for the purchase. Teachers are invited to
visit and see how students can profit from the use of
these services.
