The issue of opening the library
for extended hours has been raised at different times in
recent years. Recommendation # 11 in the report of the
external reviewer, Mr. Harry E. Welsh, states:
“Library hours of operation should be extended after
some study.”
He emphasizes four points:
-
An articulate group thinks the present policy should
be revisited;
-
Weekday extended to 5:00 PM, Saturday from 10:00 AM-
4:00 PM, or both;
-
A survey can be conducted to determine whether
weekday extension or Saturday hours are more valued;
-
The experiment should be publicized, observed, and
evaluated.
Consequently a survey has been
prepared and distributed. Particular groups of students
have been selected to complete a one-page questionnaire;
the needs of Masters and Diploma students, in particular
are being sought. Any faculty or student is invited to
participate in the survey by filling the questionnaire
available at the circulation desk.
During the process it should be
clearly understood that using the library for purposes
of socializing and group study is unacceptable.
